BepiColombo spacecraft swings past Venus on long road to Mercury

The BepiColombo SpaceCraft has crossed Venus in its journey towards Mercury.

  • The spacecraft was launched jointly by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and European Space Agency to explore planet Mercury.
  • This spacecraft mission has been launched to explore and study the mercury.
  • It was launched on the Ariane 5 rocket and will arrive in Mercury in 2025.

India hosts virtual Summit of Ministers of Justice of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation

India hosted the virtual Summit of Ministers of Justice of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, SCO.

  • Addressing the Ministers of Justice from SCO Member States, Law and Justice Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad highlighted the initiatives taken by the Indian Government for providing affordable and easy access to justice for all.
  • He mentioned Pro Bono Legal Services to provide free legal aid to marginalized sections of the society.
  • As part of activities of the Justice Ministers’ Forum, the Minister urged SCO Member States to promote exchange of ideas, best practices and experiences in identified areas through the platform.

Supersonic Cruise Missile, BrahMos successfully test fired from Indian Navy’s indigenously-built stealth destroyer INS Chennai

BRAHMOS, the supersonic cruise missile was successfully test fired from Indian Navy’s indigenously-built stealth destroyer INS Chennai, hitting a target in the Arabian Sea.

  • The missile hit the target successfully with pin-point accuracy after performing high-level and extremely complex manoeuvres.
  • BRAHMOS as a prime strike weapon will ensure the warship’s invincibility by engaging naval surface targets at long ranges, thus making the destroyer another lethal platform of Indian Navy.
  • The highly versatile BRAHMOS has been jointly designed, developed and produced by India and Russia.

First-ever SCO Startup Forum to be launched on 27th October

The first-ever SCO Startup Forum will be launched on 27th October 2020 ahead of the SCO trade ministers meeting on 28th October.

  • The forum will lay the foundation for multilateral cooperation and engagement among the SCO Member States to develop and hone their startup ecosystems, collectively.
  • India is currently the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world with over 35,000 startups, close to 25% of which are core technology startups operating in areas of AI, Robotics, Cloud Computing, IoT, Digital Health, Financial & Education Technology.
  • The ‘Startup India’ has launched 10 bilateral bridges since its inception and has helped many technology-based startups to expand their businesses to global markets.
  • The SCO currently comprises eight Member States (China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan)

FM Nirmala Sitharaman participates in 102nd meeting of World Bank Development Committee Plenary

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman participated in 102nd meeting of the World Bank Development Committee Plenary through video conference.

  • In her intervention at this session, Mrs. Sitharaman said that COVID -19 Pandemic continues to impact the developing and developed countries till date and the hard fought gains in reducing the level of poverty, achieved over a number of years, are at risk of being lost.
  • She also mentioned that the Government has committed 2.03 Billion dollar for strengthening health infrastructure in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.

Indian and Sri Lankan navies to begin their annual exercise SLINEX

The 8th annual joint exercise between Indian and Sri Lankan navies – SLINEX-20 – will begin at Trincomalee coast.

  • The 3-day exercise will continue till 21st of October.
  • SLINEX-20 aims to enhance interoperability, improve mutual understanding and exchange best practices and procedures for multi-faceted maritime operations between both navies.
  • SLINEX series of exercise exemplifies the deep engagement between India and Sri Lanka which has strengthened mutual cooperation in the maritime domain.

Bangladesh invites PM Modi to join celebrations of 50 years of country’s independence

Bangladesh has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to join the celebrations of the 50 years of the country’s independence on March 26 next year.

  • A virtual meeting between the Prime Ministers of India and Bangladesh is also likely to take place later this year.
  • Earlier, Prime Minister Modi was scheduled to visit Bangladesh to join in the birth centenary celebrations of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. But the visit was cancelled due to the Corona pandemic.

India, Chile hold first joint commission meeting

India and Chile held their first joint commission meeting and agreed to add new momentum to their relations in a wide range of fields including trade and commerce, agriculture, health and social security, defence and space.

  • The meeting held virtually was co-chaired by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Chilean counterpart Andres Allamand Zavala.
  • India welcomed Chile’s decision to designate India as a priority country in its foreign policy. Chile will also be opening its Consulate General in Mumbai.

Govt extends concessional rate on cargo movement between India, Chabahar Port in Iran

Government has extended the current concessional rate of 40 per cent discount on cargo movement between India and Chabahar Port in Iran for a period of one year.

  • The discount will apply for the coastal movement of cargo and vessel related charges, being handled at Jawaharlal Nehru Port and Deendayal Port to Shahid Beheshti Port, Chabahar.
  • The levy of concessional vessel related charges is to be applied proportionately, subject to vessel loading at least five thousand tonnes cargo to Shahid Beheshti Port.
  • The aim of the extension of the discount period is to promote the trade through Shahid Beheshti Port. It will also give a boost to coastal movement of cargo.

Mohun Bagan receive I-League trophy, 7 months after clinching title

More than seven months after Mohun Bagan clinched the 2019-20 I-League title, they were handed over the trophy.

  • Bagan won it when they clinched a 1-0 win over Aizawl on March 10 this year.
  • The I-League, is one of the two coexisting premier football leagues in India along with Indian Super League.

Nozomi Okuhara clinches Women’s Singles title at Denmark Open

In Badminton, former World Champion Nozomi Okuhara clinched the Denmark Open title beating three-time world champion Carolina Marin in women’s singles.

  • The Japanese star took 56 minutes to get the better of the Olympic gold medallist Spaniard in two games 21-19, 21-17. With reign
  • PV Sindhu of India opting to sit out the event, two of her biggest rivals made it through to the final.
  • In the men’s singles final, world number seven Anders Antonsen of Denmark defeated his compatriot Rasmus Gemke by 18-21, 21-19, 21-12.
