259-member high-level National Committee headed by Prime Minister constituted to commemorate 75 years of India’s Independence

  • The Government of India has set up a 259-member high-level national committee, to be headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to commemorate 75 years of India’s independence.
  • The 259 member national committee will provide policy direction and guidelines for the formulation of programmes for the 75th anniversary commemoration of the Indian Independence.
  • The 75 years of India’s Independence will be observed on 15 August 2022 and the celebrations for the same are proposed to be launched 75 weeks prior to this date on 12 March 2021.
  • 12 March marks the 91st anniversary of the historic Salt Satyagraha led by Mahatma Gandhi.
  • The celebrations will be held at national and international level in the form of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’.
  • The high-level committee will hold its first meeting on March 8, 2021.

Ramesh Pokhriyal Inaugurates New Delhi World Book Fair 2021-Virtual Edition

  • The Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal inaugurated the New Delhi World Book Fair 2021-Virtual Edition, on March 5, 2021, through video-conferencing.
  • The New Delhi World Book Fair 2021 is the 29th  edition of the annual event and for the first time the fair will be held virtually due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
  • The program has been organized by the National Book Trust (NBT).
  • Theme of 2021 New Delhi World Book Fair is ‘National Education Policy-2020’

40 Scholars From Six Countries Awarded India Science Research Fellowship (ISRF) 2021

  • Forty scholars from six countries have been awarded with Indian Science Research Fellowship (ISRF) 2021.
  • The winning scholars will now have the opportunity to carry out their research in Indian institutes and universities using the state of the art facilities in these places.
  • These scholars have been selected on the basis of their research proposal, experience, academic merit and publication record.

Indian Science Research Fellowship

  • The Indian Science Research Fellowship is a platform to establish research cooperation and S&T partnerships with neighbouring countries of India.
  • The initiative was launched by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) in 2015 for Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand.
  • Since its launch, 5 calls have been made between 2015-2019 and 128 fellows from these countries have been awarded fellowship under this programme.
  • Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, no award was made in 2020.

Economic Affairs Secretary Tarun Bajaj gets additional charge of Revenue Secretary

  • Centre has given additional charge of the post of Revenue Secretary to the current Economic Affairs Secretary Tarun Bajaj.
  • Bajaj, a 1988-batch Haryana-cadre IAS officer, replaces Finance Secretary Ajay Bhushan Pandey, upon his superannuation on February 28, 2021.
  • Pandey, a 1984 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Officer of Maharashtra cadre took charge of Revenue Secretary on November 30, 2018.
  • Later, in March 2020, following his seniority among five Secretaries in the Finance Ministry, he was designated as Finance Secretary.

Indian Economist Ligia Noronha appointed as Assistant Secretary-General of UN

  • Leading Indian economist Ligia Noronha has been appointed as the Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the New York Office of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
  • Noronha will succeed fellow Indian and development economist Satya Tripathi.
  • Noronha, who is working with UNEP since 2014, is an economist with over 30 years of international experience in the field of sustainable development.
  • Prior to joining the UNEP, Noronha worked at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in New Delhi as Executive Director (Research Coordination) and as Director of the Division on Resources, Regulation and Global Security.

Indian-Origin Naureen Hassan appointed as First VP & COO of Federal Reserve Bank

  • Indian-origin Naureen Hassan has been appointed as the first Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the New York-based Federal Reserve Bank, by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.
  • The 25-year Hassan will take over the new role with effect from March 15, 2021.
  • With this new role, Hassan will become the second highest ranking officer of the New York Fed as well as an alternate voting member of the Federal Open Market Committee.
  • Prior to this, she was the Chief Digital Officer for Morgan Stanley Wealth Management (MSWM).

EPFO keeps interest rate unchanged at 8.5% for 2020-21

  • The board of Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has kept the interest rates on Provident Fund deposits for the financial year 2020-21 at 8.5 percent.
  • The rate has been kept unchanged, as in 2019-20.
  • The decision was taken by the Central Board of Trustees, at 228th meeting held in Srinagar on March 04, 2021, under the chairmanship of Labour Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar.

HDFC ERGO Launches “Business Kisht Suraksha” to Protect MFIs & Financial Institutions against Calamities & Natural Disasters

  • HDFC ERGO General Insurance has launched a product called “Business Kisht Suraksha”, to provide a unique cover to MFIs, financial institutions and banks in the event of a catastrophe or natural disaster.
  • The Business Kisht Suraksha aims to protect the balance sheet of financial institutions due to non-payment of EMIs by borrowers, following listed calamities such as floods, earthquakes, cyclones, etc.
  • The new product will address these concern by indemnifying against the climatic changes and also protecting financial institutions from rising NPAs occurring.
  • Business Kisht can be customised as per the needs of an individual MFI or financial institution.
  • The product can also be tailor-made depending on the geographical presence of the borrower, MFI or any financial institution according to the perils/climatic conditions that the location is prone to.

Axis Securities launches online platform ‘YIELD’ for hassle free investment in bond, debenture

  • Axis Securities has launched a first-of-its-kind initiative called ‘YIELD’, that will allow retail investors direct access to the debt instruments,
  • YIELD is an online platform to buy and sell bonds as well as debentures in the secondary market.
  • It  will remove the hassle of filling up physical forms and even the need for separate KYC with the bond institutions.
  • The product shall aggregate only ‘AAA’ to ‘A’ rated quality debt instruments available for investment in the secondary market, to facilitate transactions in secure options only.
  • Through this product, retail investors will get access to bonds, which were earlier available only to the large corporations, family offices, or HNIs.

  • M G George Muthoot, the Chairman and Whole Time Director of the Muthoot Group, has passed away. He was 71.
  • Mr George became the managing director of Muthoot Group in 1979 and its chairman in 1993.
  • Muthoot Finance Ltd is one the largest gold loan NBFCs in India, headquartered in Kochi, Kerala.
