DECE3 Previous Year Question(TEE Dec 2018 )-IGNOU-ORSP

1. State whether you agree or disagree with the following statements. Give reasons for your answer. 4×5=20

(a) Mental illness is the same as mental retardation.

Disagree

Mental retardation and mental illness are two distinct conditions.

  • Mental retardation is incomplete mental de- velopment. Mentally retarded persons are those whose normal intellectual growth was arrested at some time be- fore birth, during the birth process, or in the early years of development.
  • Mental illness, also called mental health disorders, refers to a wide range of mental health conditions — disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior. Examples of mental illness include depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders and addictive behaviors.

(b) There are no positive effects of labeling special children.

DisAgree

Advantages

1. Individualized Education Program (IEP)

An obvious pro of labeling a child who has special needs in the classroom is that teachers can use this information to help the child learn using their limitations as a guide.  “Once a student is identified, the student can receive an individualized education program designed to meet his/her unique needs,” says Newsome. “Identifying students in specific categories of disability allows professionals to design an educational plan specifically for the student which will best meet the students’ educational needs.”

2. Extra Learning Support

By labeling a child, they will receive extra services that they may not have been able to receive otherwise. For example, the child may be able to receive instruction in a learning support room at a pace that works for them. “They can receive frequent repetition and instruction in a much smaller setting with other students just like them,” says Rose Kivi, author of “How the ‘Learning Disabled’ Label Affects Students,” posted on brighthubeducation.com.

3. Targeted Instruction

Kivi says that by labeling the child as “learning disabled” these students are able to get help in order to remediate their specific problem. “Receiving instruction based on what students need is crucial in helping them excel and be successful in the future,” she says. The teachers and staff are better equipped to teach the child in a way that ensures learning by knowing what the specific learning disability is for each student.

(c) In many ways, a special child is like any other child.

Agree

  • They are similar to other child on many aspect.
  • They have intellectual capacity like other.
  • If we support them and provide some special needs( hearing aids..) , they will able to do their own day to day work by their own as like other children.

(d) An impairment always leads to disability.

DisAgree

  • impairment refers to a problem with a structure or organ of the body; disability is a functional limitation with regard to a particular activity
  • Ex Birth mark is a impaired tissue but it does not lead to Disability.

2. (a) Discuss the rationale for providing early child development interventions in India.  10 mark

  • There has been a large amount of scientific research in Child Developpent, all over the world , in the last eight decades. The conclusions, arising from a variety of studies, converge on one clear fact : that in the early years of childhood, intelligence, personality and social behaviour develop rapidly.
  • The early years of life have been acknowledged as the most crucial for optimum development & fan individual.
  • The first six years of life are critical for development as the rate of development is most rapid in this period, aid consequently, this is the time when environmental enrichment or deprivation makes its greatest impact.
  • Since development is proceeding at a very fast rate, unfavorable experiences such as lack of adequate food, health care, nurturance or stimulation, unhealthy living conditions and exploitative working conditions hinder development to a considerable extent.
  • In the same way, favorable conditions foster development.
  • The effect is long-lasting since the foundation of development in later years is laid at this age.
  • It must be appreciated that development is not simply the result of mechanical acts of feeding and physical care, but rather of a feeling of total well-being that arises from growing up in a healthy atmosphere with love, warmth and opportunities for learning.
  • children need to be given tender loving care and attention, not just because they will one day become productive adults, but because they have the right, as children, to live and to grow to their full potential.
  • In other words, at each stage of the development span, every person is fully entitled to enjoy human rights. Children have rights too and the right to develop fully should be universally accepted.

These are the rationale for providing early child development interventions in India

     (b) What are some problems in the implementation of the ICDS programme ?  10 mark

  • The reduction in the proportion of undernourished children in India over the past decade has been modest and slower than what has been achieved in other countries with comparable socioeconomic indicators.
  • While aggregate levels of undernutrition are shockingly high, the picture is further exacerbated by the significant inequalities across states and socioeconomic groups – girls, rural areas, the poorest and scheduled tribes and castes are the worst affected – and these inequalities appear to be increasing.
  • Child malnutrition is mostly the result of high levels of exposure to infection and inappropriate infant and young child feeding and caring practices, and has its origins almost entirely during the first two to three years of life.
  • The ICDS program, while successful in many ways, has not made a significant dent in child malnutrition. This is mostly due to the priority that the program has placed on food supplementation, targeting mostly children after the age of three when malnutrition has already set in.
  • The ICDS program should be redirected towards the younger children (0-3 years) and the most vulnerable population segments in those states and districts where the prevalence of undernutrition is higher.
  • The ICDS program should aim at:
  1. Improving mothers’ feeding and caring behaviour with emphasis on infant and young child feeding and maternal nutrition during pregnancy and lactation.
  2. Improving household water and sanitation.
  3. Stregthening the referral to the health system with emphasis on prevention and control of common child diseases including acute malnutrition.
  4. Providing micronutrients.
  • Urgent changes are needed to bridge the gap between the policy intentions of ICDS and its actual implementation.

(a) What are the basic ideas in the educational philosophy of the following ?  7+7=14 MARK
(i) Tagore

  • There are four fundamental principles in Tagore’s educational philosophy; naturalism, humanism, internationalism and idealism.
  • Shantiniketan and Visva Bharathi are both based on these very principles.
  • He insisted that education should be imparted in a natural surroundings.
  • He believed in giving children the freedom of expression.
  • He said, “Children have their active subconscious mind which like a tree has the power to gather its food from the surrounding atmosphere”.
  • He also said that an educational institution should not be “ a dead cage in which living minds are fed with food that’s artificially prepared.
  • Hand work and arts are the spontaneous over flow of our deeper nature and spiritual significance”.

(i) टैगोर

(ii) Montessori

  • Montessori is a method of education that is based on self-directed activity, hands-on learning and collaborative play.

  • In Montessori classrooms children make creative choices in their learning, while the classroom and the highly trained teacher offer age-appropriate activities to guide the process.

  • Children work in groups and individually to discover and explore knowledge of the world and to develop their maximum potential.

  • Montessori classrooms are beautifully crafted environments designed to meet the needs of children in a specific age range.

  •  Dr. Maria Montessori discovered that experiential learning in this type of classroom led to a deeper understanding of language, mathematics, science, music, social interactions and much more.

  • Most Montessori classrooms are secular in nature, although the Montessori educational method can be integrated successfully into a faith-based program.

  • Every material in a Montessori classroom supports an aspect of child development, creating a match between the child’s natural interests and the available activities. Children can learn through their own experience and at their own pace.

  • They can respond at any moment to the natural curiosities that exist in all humans and build a solid foundation for life-long learning.

  • The Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) was established by Maria Montessori in 1929 to protect the integrity of her work and to support high standards for both teacher training and schools.

  • Today, AMI continues to uphold Maria Montessori’s vision while collaborating with contemporary research in neuroscience and child development.

  • Montessori Northwest is proud to be an official teacher training center of AMI, training teachers to work with children from birth to age twelve.

(a) What is the ‘child-to-child’ strategy of communication ? Explain why this strategy can be effective for improving the health status of a  community.  10 MARK

‘child-to-child’ strategy of communication

  • It is often said that children are like ‘wet clay’. They can be moulded through their experiences.
  • Children in their formative years arc receptive to ideas.
  • They are learning all the while from the people they love and trust and by observing people and things around them.
  • As the children grow older, the habits they develop become ingrained and it becomes difficult to change them.
  • So the best time to invest in developing this resource is early childhood when ideas, knowledge and values take root.
  • School is an excellent and congenial environment for such changes to occur.

Principles (Objectives) of Child-to-Child Strategy

young children are entrusted with the task of “looking after” or “rearing” their younger siblings in the absence of the mother or
other family members. Even when the mother is not absent from home, she may be busy with household works and thus entrusts the task of feeding, bathing .

these older children are taught the basics of how to feed the younger ones properly and protect their health and well-being.’ they can make a real difference to the health status and general well-being of young children in their area.

Child- to child strategy is thus designed to educate and encourage older children to concern themselves with good habits and right values of life and to communicate the same to the younger brothers and sisters in their care.

Children can be taught simple preventive and curative measures related to health and general well-being that are appropriate for their communities. This goes a long way in improving the health profile of a community, for the following reasons:

  • Children are always eager to learn and try out new things because of their innate curiosity.
  • Learning the preventive and curative measures related to health makes them feel empowered and create in the sense of self-confidence and self-importance.
  • They are open-minded and accept new ideas without much fuss, as they are not yet set in their habits.
  • These children can become teachers for younger children because younger children learn happily from older ones – be it games, information/knowledge, skills etc.
  • Children respond, to ideas and attitudes of other children. They help promote child to child teaching-learning strategy.
  • The habits they gather in younger years remain ingrained all their lives and, as future parents, these good habit and values go a long way in building good environment.
  •  Children from a very useful bridge in approaching families/parent.

6. (a) As an ECCE worker, what would you do if a child in your centre has a fit ? 5 MARK

The brain functions with flow of electrical activity in it. When the normal electrical activity
is disturbed, the person has a convulsion or fit.

  • Why this happens is not known. When a child has a fit she can become unconscious, may fall suddenly to the ground, become stiff or begin to jerk, cry out or make other noises.
  • The child may also lose control over bowel and  bladder for that period. She may not be conscious of urinating or passing stools.
  • The child’s face can become contorted, the breathing heavy, and she may perspire and foam at the mouth.
  • She may injure herself by biting her lips or tongue or by hitting against objects while falling, The more severe part of the fit may last from two to five minutes.

There are certain things which the parents and you, as an educator in a chlld care centre, .
must keep in mind while managing children who have fits.

  • The child who is aware of the peculiar sensations that she has just before the fit starts can be trained to immediately communicate this to people around her or take precautionary measures, like sitting on the ground against a safe rest, on her own.
  • Since the child can fall to the ground, the area around the child should be cleared of furniture and other articles, so that she does not hurt herself.
  • The child should not be moved, restrained, or held during the fit.
  • The child’s head should be protected by cradling it in one’s hands. Do not restrain head movement, but move with the child.
  • When possible, move the child’s head to one side so that the saliva drains out and does not choke her.
  • Turning the head would also prevent the child from getting choked on her tongue, which could roll to the back of the throat.
  • Try to insert a soft object, for example, a folded handkerchief between the child’s jaws to prevent her from biting her tongue.
  • When the jerky movements subside a little, turn the child on her side so that she can breathe easily.
  • Loosen her tight clothes when she is having the fit.
  • Sit down on the floor next to the child to reassure her.
  • Allow the child to remain lying down for a while after she has regained consciousness.
  • The child may not remember anything about the fit. She may also be tired.
  • Talk to her in a calm voice. Explain to her that she had a fit, but do not make an issue of it.
  • When she is ready, help her to stand up.
  • There is no nced to call a doctor, unless you have been asked to do so by her parents.
  • Inform the parents about the fit and for how long it happened.
  • Other children at the centre should be explained about the child’s fits so that they are not scared when it happens or make fun. Rather, involve them in taking care of the child, for example, by moving furniture or staying with her.
  • Above all, remain calm when the child has a fit.

(b) How would you manage an aggressive child ? 5

We know that aggressive children are not easy to like. They are often loud. hostile and violent and, hence, are unpleasant to have around. Other children avoid them or are afraid of them, while adults find it difficult to discipline them. But we cannot forget that the child is not responsible for being aggressive.

The following are some hints that will help you to deal with aggressive behaviour

i) Avoid punishing the child for aggressive acts, as she is already used to punishment and that has not proved to be helpful.
ii) Do not wait to give her attention till she shows the usual aggressive behavior by saying : ‘Don’t do it, or I will punish you’. Do something she likes during her non-aggressive period. For example, tell her a story or sing a song to her.
iii) If she shows aggression during this period, ignore it. As soon as she shows ‘good behaviour, pat her on the back or give her something she likes to play with. However, if the child is likely to harm others or herself by hitting or kicking etc., immediately hold her from behind so that her arms and legs become immobile for a while. When her anger subsides, reason with her or instruct her firmly, depending upon what she might respond to.
iv) Use concrete rewards to reinforce non-aggressive behavior. For example, an educator gave red and golden stars made of paper, for every fifteen minutes or half an hour of non-aggressive behavior. When the child collected 4-5 such stars, she was allowed to do any one thing she wanted, such as playing with her favorite toy, or the whole group clapping for her.
v) Finally, a talk with the family members on the lines discussed below would help. If the child is repeatedly punished at home, or if other members fight with each other, there is very little chance of the child changing.

Therefore, help the family understand that if they change their ways of interacting with one another, the child’s behavior will also change.
While managing aggressive behavior, do not
i) Use physical beating to discipline the child.
ii) Shame the child in front of other children, as it will make her more angry.
iii) Lock her up in a room.

(c) How can you encourage speaking skills in children with visual impairment ? 10 MARK

A child with a visual impairment can often hear a sound but  will need help from those around them to learn the source of  the sound, or what has caused it. For example, a child might  hear somebody ringing a bell, but not be able to see the person  shaking the bell or where they are.

Children with visual impairment may be more tuned in to  information coming from sound, touch, taste and smell. Your  voice and commentary about the world around them is a way  that your child can increase their understanding.

As your child may not be able to see your facial expressions, it  is important to use different tones of voice to convey emotion.  Remember to still keep your voice calm and gentle, as their  hearing may be more sensitive.

When you communicate with your child, getting down to their  level will help them develop an awareness of where you are and  allow them to communicate directly to you.

When you come into a room, let your child know you are there.  Also, let your child know when you leave a room. This can help  your child to grow confident in knowing who is around them.

Talking to your baby

By chatting to your child throughout the day, you are giving  them an example of speech sounds. Spending time talking to  yourself while you go about your daily activities can give your  baby more experience of hearing you make speech sounds  correctly.

As you do activities around the house you can narrate what you  are doing (e.g. ‘It’s time for a bath. I’m going to turn the water  on. Splash! Wow, that is cold! Now to add some bubbles!’). You  can have fun and use made up sounds. Your baby will like hearing  you speak and connecting the words you say with the sounds  they hear (the sound of water running and the word ‘water’).

Some ideas:

  • Make your voice go up and down in pitch and volume.
  • Make funny sounds (blow raspberries, smack your lips).
  • Allow your child to feel you making these sounds as you make them, by placing their hand on your face.

Babble with your baby

When you hear your baby make a sound, you can repeat the  sound back to them. This lets your baby hear the sounds they are  making and tune into their own speech sounds. Let your baby  feel your mouth moving with their hands, or on their skin. For  example, blow a raspberry and let your baby touch your lips to  feel the vibration.

Turn-taking

One of the first steps in learning about communication is  beginning to take turns in conversation. You can do this with  your child by letting them make some sounds, then saying  something, then pausing to allow your child to take their turn  again.

Learning to listen

You can teach your child to tune in to the speech sounds and  noises they hear. You will need to explain the sounds and noises

that your child hears, as they will not have seen what made the  noise. You can do this by going on a listening walk and naming  the sounds that you hear (e.g. birds in the tree, dog parking, bus  beeping).

When you are at home, you can direct their attention to sounds  like the telephone or the vacuum cleaner. You can ask, ‘What’s  that noise?’ then let them touch the item that made the noise.  You can do the same if there is a smell in the environment, for  example ‘Can you smell this flower?’.

Change the sound of your voice

When you make sounds, change the pitch and tune in your voice  so that your baby can listen and copy. You can make this fun by  doing this in play.

For example, when you swing or bounce your baby up and  down, vary the tune in your voice to match the word, so your  voice goes up when you say ‘up’ and down with ‘down’.

Starting talking

Encourage your baby to make sounds. Babies at an early age  usually won’t be able to copy sounds perfectly. It is more  important for you to provide a clear example of the sound and  this will encourage your baby to join in.

Teach new sounds

Encourage early speech sounds, particularly gentle lip sounds  such as “muh, buh, puh”. Use words like “peep-o”, “pop!”  and “mummy”, or imitate animal sounds, for example, “moo”,  “baa” and “miaow”.

You can also make up nonsense strings of sounds, for example  ‘mumumum’ or ‘boobooboo’. If you make the sounds, your baby  will want to join in.

Pop bubbles while saying ‘pop, pop, pop’ and play hiding games,  saying ‘peep-o’.

Let your child start the conversation

Giving your child a chance to start a conversation is a positive  way for them to learn to be active in their discovery. Give your  child options (e.g. a choice between two toys), so they can think  and choose. If you child starts an interaction (e.g. reaches for

a toy) encourage them and talk to them about what they are  doing.

Looking for talking

Encourage your child to turn their head towards you when they  are communicating. This will help your child to develop social  interaction skills. Over time, this will become a habit and will help  them to interact with others.

7. (a) Giving examples, discuss the benefits of using role play as a method of communication to explore the issue of  ‘gender discrimination’ with community members.  10 MARK

Role play provides an excellent opportunity to re-examine one’s own as well as others’ point of view, feelings, behavior and experiences and thus helps to develop new insights and sensitivity.

When sensitively enacted and handled, role play brings forward hidden attitudes and unexpressed feelings for review, thus facilitating the process of checking one’s perceptions and attitudes. The audience can express opinions and feelings without fear of rejection because the role play situation is, after all, not real.

It often happens that after witnessing a role play, some members of the group express the very feelings and attitudes which you want to change and which, in usual circumstances, are never voiced or uttered.

gender discrimination

During a role-play session on discrimination between boys and girls in the family, one of the persons responded during the discussion by saying: “But girls are a burden, no doubt”.

When the discussion leader asked: “Wliy do you say so?’, the person responded that “No, no! I am not saying this.

One of the characters in the role play said this.” It is quite clear that the person in the group feels
girls to be a burden and has expressed this view as well, but the role-play situation allows
her to attribute this view to the character in the role play and not to herself.

Thus, she does not have to face rejection from members in the group who feel otherwise. Yet, a
sensitive communicator should understand that the view being expressed is the person’s
own. Yet, there is no need to force the person to acknowledge the view as her own if she
does not wish to. However, you must try to bring about a change in the person’s thinking
in an indirect manner.

You cannot force people to change their views and attitudes. In any case, change cannot
be brought about in one attempt. Therefore, be careful that during the discussions after
role play you do not impose your opinions. Be patient and explain your views but take
care that you do not become vehement about them. –

Advantages of Role PIay
Some of the key advantages of role play are
i) It is a simple, low-cost and effective method of communication.
ii) It focuses directly on the problem and shows how to deal with it.
iii) It shows many critical aspects of an issue and different reactions to a situation within a short period of time.
iv) It motivates people to adopt new behavior by changing their perceptions and attitudes.

 Limitations of Role PIay
i) If this method is not well utilized, it can get restricted to mere entertainment.
ii) If the roles are exaggerated, distorted or underplayed, the learning potential of a role play is considerably reduced.
iii) If role play is not analyzed well, the critical issues get lost.
(b) Discuss the factors related to the communicator which can be barriers for effective communication. 10 MARK

If the sender or the communicator does not formulate the message clearly and completely,
or uses-unclear channels or is unskilled in the correct use of channels, signs and symbols,
the communication may not be effective and in some cases, it may breakdown completely.

Physical Appearance

  • Cleanliness and orderliness in one’s physical appearance are always appealing to the audience.
  • They add to your personality, boost your confidence, thus adding to effective communication.
  • A clumsy, unclean communicator wearing inappropriate clothes, does not arouse the faith of the audience.
  • The attire is very important and should be such that is acceptable to the people you communicate with.
  • Jeans , Western dresses may be alright when you are with teenager / youngsters, but when communicating with the parents or community members, a saree or salwar kameez may be more appropriate.

Speech

  • The way a person speaks has a very important bearing on the communication process.
  • In some cases, a person may have difficulties in speaking because of some physical disabilities.
  • But very often it is the anxiety and fear that mars our speech and hampers effective  communication.
  • These causes can be overcome by building one’s self-confidence – by identifying the factors that cause fear and anxiety and by making an effort of overcoming them.

Message

  • Sometimes it happens that even though you are a good communicator with a good command
over language and diction, you may not have formulated the message well.
  • The message may be  incomplete. This, of course, would result in poor or inadequate understanding by the receiver.

Channel

  • Selection of the channel for communicating a message is as important as the formulation
of the message itself. A poor or wrong selection of channel often leads to confusion.
  • In the case of the first worker the selection of channel – simply talking about ORS
preparation – was inappropriate as most skills cannot be acquired by simply listening to
the process, but need practical experience. You would need to hear this in mind when
communicating to the mother’s parents things like how a particular nutritious snack for
preschoolers may be prepared, or how a couple of interesting toys can be made for young
children from waste material commonly available at home.
