● Every year, the National Epilepsy Day is celebrated on November 17.


● The day is celebrated to create awareness about epilepsy.
● Epilepsy is a chronic brain disorder. It results in recurrent fits or
seizures.
● The seizures occur due to sudden and excessive discharges occurring
in brain cells or neurons.
● Mostly epilepsy occurs in patients who are over the age of 65 and in
children.

Epilepsy
• Epilepsy is a chronic brain disorder. It results in recurrent fits or seizures.
• The seizures occur due to sudden and excessive discharges occurring in
brain cells or neurons.
• The disease can be diagnosed only after the person has had at least one
seizure.
• Mostly epilepsy occurs in patients who are over the age of 65 and in children.
• According to the World Health Organization, around 50 million people in the
world are suffering from epilepsy.
• Out of them 80% are from developing countries. The disease is curable.
However, most of the epileptic patients in developing countries do not
receive proper treatment.

● Peru’s fifth president in five years, Manuel Merino, was forced
out of power just five days after taking office.


● The turmoil began on November 9, when centrist Martin
Vizcarra, Merino’s popular predecessor in office, was impeached
by the Peruvian legislature on grounds of “permanent moral
incapacity” over unproven charges of corruption

● Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and his
Australian counterpart, Scott Morrison, may agree to
sign a defence agreement in a bid to counter China’s
growing influence in the South China Sea and over the
Pacific island nations.


● This defence agreement has taken six years to
negotiate and would need to be ratified by lawmakers
of both countries.

Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD)

● Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) is the informal strategic dialogue
between India, USA, Japan and Australia with a shared objective to
ensure and support a “free, open and prosperous” Indo-Pacific region.
● The idea of Quad was first mooted by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo
Abe in 2007.
● However, the idea couldn’t move ahead with Australia pulling out of it,
apparently due to Chinese pressure.
● In November 2017, India, the US, Australia and Japan gave shape to the
long-pending “Quad” Coalition to develop a new strategy to keep the
critical sea routes in the Indo-Pacific free of any influence (especially
China).

● The second phase of Exercise Malabar 2020 will be
conducted in the Northern Arabian Sea from 17
November to 20th November.


● This phase will involve coordinated operations of
increasing complexity between the navies of Australia,
India, Japan and the United States.
● Phase Two will witness joint operations, centered around
the Vikramaditya Carrier Battle Group of the Indian Navy
and Nimitz Carrier Strike Group of the US Navy.

Malabar

● Malabar series of maritime exercises commenced in 1992 as a bilateral
Indian Navy- United States Navy exercise.
● Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force joined Malabar in 2015 and The
2020 edition will now witness participation of the Royal Australian Navy in
this joint maritime exercise.
● Phase-2 of Malabar-20 is scheduled to be conducted in the Arabian Sea
in mid-November.

● A research team of IIT Guwahati has formulated
efficient “pincer” catalytic systems that transform
biomass wastes into valuable chemicals.


● Tiny amounts of these “pincer catalysts” repeatedly
convert large amounts of industrial waste such as
glycerol into lactic acid and hydrogen.
● Such catalysts also efficiently convert bioethanol, a
low-energy density fuel, into high-energy density
butanol.

● Actor Sonu Sood has been appointed as state icon of Punjab by
the Election Commission of India (ECI).


● The decision of honouring Sonu Sood with the title comes after
he earned laurels for his humanitarian work during the
lockdown.
● Sonu has been helping migrant workers reach their hometowns
amid the coronavirus pandemic.
● He also helped people by giving them face masks, food, mobile
phones and more

● He was also a member of the Indian Hockey team that won the
Asian Cup in 2007.

Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay National Welfare Fund For Sportspersons

● Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay National Welfare Fund For Sportspersons (PDUNWFS)
was set up in March, 1982 with a view to assisting outstanding Sportspersons of
yesteryear, living in indigent circumstances who had brought glory to the Country in
sports.
● The scheme as revised in May, 2016 to provide for lump sum ex-gratia assistance to
outstanding Sportspersons of yesteryears.
● Provision of pension has been done away with as there is already a Scheme of
Pension for Meritorious Sportspersons.

● Japanese physicist Masatoshi
Koshiba, who shared 2002 Nobel
prize for the detection of cosmic
neutrinos, passed away.


● His student, Takaaki Kajita, won the
Nobel Prize in physics in 2015 for
research at the Super-Kamiokande
facility that found neutrinos have
mass.

● Noted journalist and writer Ravi Belagere passed
away.


● He was famous for writings on the crime world and his
column ‘Paapigala Lokadalli’ was very popular.

● The Union government has extended the tenure of
Enforcement Directorate (ED) Director Sanjay Kumar Mishra
by a year after modifying his appointment order that was
issued in 2018.


● His tenure was to end next week as the ED director’s post
comes with a fixed term of two years.

Enforcement Directorate (ED)
● The ED is a central investigative agency that enforces two central laws, the Prevention of Money Laundering
Act (PMLA) and the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).
● These laws were enacted to curb money laundering, terror financing, black money and hawala or illegal
financial transactions that have cross-border ramifications.

● SBM Bank India, the wholly-owned subsidiary of State Bank of Mauritius has partnered with Fintech  PayNearby to launch a neo banking platform.


● Both firms signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to build an “open banking” network
towards delivering basic banking solutions as well as advanced financial services, to their customers.

Neo bank
● Neo bank is a type of bank that operates exclusively online, i.e., it does not have any
traditional physical branch networks.
● Neo banks are cheaper, faster. In one single platform, the neo bank can integrate the entire
financial portfolio.
● It offers complete digital banking experience through mobile applications.
● It is also known as an online bank, internet-only bank, virtual bank or digital bank.

● The Reserve Bank of India has imposed a penalty of Rs 1
crore on Punjab National Bank for violating the Payment and
Settlement Systems Act, 2007.


● Punjab National Bank was operating a bilateral ATM-sharing
arrangement with Druk PNB Bank Ltd, Bhutan, since April
2010 without prior approval or authorisation from India’s
banking regulator.

● HDFC Bank & IndusInd Bank have been put in the ‘red
flag’ list, a system used for monitoring foreign portfolio
investor (FPI) limits.


● A listed company enters the list when the available
legroom for overseas investment is less than 3% of the
permissible limit.
● FPIs can invest up to 74% in both HDFC Bank and
IndusInd Bank.

Foreign portfolio investment
● Foreign portfolio investment (FPI) consists of securities and other financial assets passively
held by foreign investors.
● It does not provide the investor with direct ownership of financial assets and is relatively liquid
depending on the volatility of the market.
● FPI is part of a country’s capital account and is shown on its Balance of Payments (BOP).
● The BOP measures the amount of money flowing from one country to other countries over one
monetary year.
● The investor does not actively manage the investments through FPIs, he does not have control
over the securities or the business.
● The investor’s goal is to create a quick return on his money.
● FPI is often referred to as “hot money” because of its tendency to flee at the first signs of
trouble in an economy.
● FPI is more liquid and less risky than Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).
