Bhubaneswar replaced Cuttack as the capital on 19 August 1949, 2 years after India gained its independence from Britain. The modern city was designed by the German architect Otto Königsberger in 1946.

The Lingaraja temple is the largest temple in Bhubaneswar. The central tower of the temple is 180 ft (55 m) tall and Build by Soma Dynasty .

The first Odia magazine, Bodha Dayini was published in Balasore in 1861. Its goal was to promote Odia literature and draw attention to lapses in government policy. The first Odia paper The Utkala Deepika, was first published in 1866 under editor Gourishankar Ray and Bichitrananda

Nayagrh

Baisipalli Wildlife Sanctuary was created on 6 May 1981 and is located in Nayagrh, Odisha, India, adjacent to the Satkosia Gorge Wildlife Sanctuary.

Notes: The literary work, Gita Govinda was composed by Jayadeva. He was the famous poet of Bengal and was one of the five gems in the court of Lakshman Sen (ruler of Sena dynasty).

Iron Man of India Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had accompanied him on this visit. On March 29, 1921, accompanied by Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das, Gandhi reached Berhampur and addressed a huge gathering at the Barracks Ground, which is now Berhampur Stadium.
